Orange police officer seriously injured after being struck by possible DUI driver

When investigating a man found asleep at the wheel in Orange, a woman suspected to be driving under the influence struck a police officer early Saturday morning.

At 3 a.m., Orange police responded to a vehicle blocking a roadway in in the 500 block of North Cambridge and discovered the sleeping man.

As they investigated, a Hyundai sedan collided with an officer and patrol car. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital with significant injuries, police said.

The driver of the Hyundai was a woman who sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Alcohol was believed to be a factor in the incident, according to investigators.

The man sleeping in his vehicle was not involved in the collision.

The Santa Ana field office of the California Highway Patrol was handling the investigation. Witnesses with information were asked to contact the CHP at (714) 567-6000.
