SAN PEDRO, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- City officials cleared a homeless encampment in the 700 block of Palos Verdes Street in San Pedro Tuesday in an effort to protect the health and safety of residents and businesses.

"There's large containers of urine and feces that are left there," said LAPD Harbor Division Sgt. Catherine Plows.

Official say most of the homeless were pushed out of parks and hillsides in the city because of construction and were forced to live on public streets.

"Many of these people that are out here right now have been residents of San Pedro for a long time and they're finding it really difficult to get out of the situation they're in," said Shari Weaver, program director of the nonprofit Harbor Interfaith Services.

Notices were posted on Friday, giving those on the street 72 hours to pack up and leave or take advantage of the many services offered to the homeless in the city.

"They are offered the assistance and the help. Often times, they don't want it. They feel that this is their home, a city sidewalk is their home," said Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino.

San Pedro officials admit this is difficult work and a sensitive issue for those living on the street.

"They're a little bit angry today. They're a little bit upset and I think the reason they're upset is that sometimes these connections to housing do take some time," Weaver said.

"There are some facilities that are available and open right now, but the person has to be willing to take them up on that offer," Plows said.

Many of the homeless just moved to another street, but Buscaino says he will continue to post notices and clear the sidewalks in hopes of building a better city.

"We are trying to bring tourism dollars, retail, dining [and] entertainment opportunities along the waterfront," Buscaino said.
