Suspect killed in East LA deputy-involved shooting

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A 29-year-old suspect was killed in a deputy-involved shooting in East Los Angeles early Sunday morning.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies conducted a traffic stop around 3:50 a.m. at Whittier Boulevard and Ferris Avenue. The stop was made to investigate a possible stolen vehicle, authorities said.

As the deputy approached the right-front passenger of the car, the male suspect started fighting with the deputy and a fight ensued.

During the struggle, the deputies noticed the suspect was armed and that he was attempting to grab his weapon. Authorities said deputies gave several commands for the man to stop, but he continued to struggle and grab for his weapon. A deputy-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was hit.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. A .22-caliber revolver was recovered at the scene and two people who were also in the car at the time were detained.

No deputies were injured in the shooting. The investigation was ongoing.
