SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KABC) -- A man was shot after attempting to stab two deputies at the Downtown Santa Monica Expo Line station on Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Authorities said the shooting happened at the Downtown Santa Monica Expo Line station, near 4th Street and Colorado Avenue, at about 12:55 p.m.
"He was walking toward the deputies and then lunged at them to try to stab them," Lt. Joe Mendoza with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
Officials said the deputies noticed the man was carrying a knife in his right hand.
"He approached the deputies and there was a struggle over that knife," Mendoza said. "During the struggle the suspect produced a second knife, at which time there was a deputy-involved shooting that occurred."
The man was struck in the body and taken to the hosptial. Authorities said the man was expected to survive his injuries.
No deputies were injured during the incident.
Deputies said two kitchen-style knives were recovered at the scene.
The Downtown Santa Monica station was closed following the shooting. Officials said trains were turned back to the 17th Street/Santa Monica College station.
Bus shuttles were offered for service between the Downtown Santa Monica and 17th Street/Santa Monica College stations.
