Suspect shot, killed by Long Beach police identified

The coroner on Monday identified a knife-wielding suspect who was shot and killed by Long Beach police over the weekend.

Richard Barrett, 62, was shot Saturday after allegedly breaking into his neighbor's apartment. The neighbor's dog was also found dead inside the residence.

Police responded to a report of an armed residential robbery in the 300 block of Cherry Avenue around 3:55 p.m. The neighbor was able to run out the back door as Barrett allegedly tried to get in. When officers attempted to make contact, the shooting occurred. Barrett was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured, and a knife was recovered at the scene.

Investigators said Barrett and the neighbor had known each other for 10 years. A reason for the break in is unknown. According to friends, the two had an ongoing feud.

Some neighbors have raised concerns over the shooting, saying they didn't hear the officers order Barrett to drop the weapon before firing.

The ongoing investigation is being handled by Long Beach police and the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office.
