Oscar red carpet preparations nearly complete
Crews are nearly finished preparing for Hollywood's biggest event of the year.

HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The countdown to Oscar Sunday is near-at-hand. Besides the steep competition, the possibility of rain is really the talk of the town.

An area of low pressure will approach the region from Central California Sunday, driving in between a quarter-inch to a half-inch of rain.

Crews have set up ten plastic canopies over the iconic red carpet outside of the Dolby Theatre.

"Unfortunately, they're going to stay up this year. Mother nature has not been kind," said Joe Lewis, head of outdoor production at the Oscars.

Instead of thousands of flowers lining the red carpet, organizers have gone for a more digital look with lots of video and LED imagery this year.

Security at the Oscars will also be making history. At least 600 undercover officers were hired to protect the A-listers.

For those who don't walk away with the gold statue this Sunday, this year's consolation prize is a gift bag worth more than $160,000.

Meanwhile, crews are working around the clock to get Hollywood Boulevard ready for its close-up. This means major road closures and restrictions for the area.

Finishing touches will be made through the night, including vacuuming the red carpet multiple times and giving decorative Oscar statues another coat of paint.

The sidewalk remained open Saturday to allow tourist a look behind the scenes.

"We wish we could be here to watch all of it tomorrow, but I think it's going to be a little bit too crowded," tourist Julie Bracken said.
