OXNARD, Calif. (KABC) -- Two men were killed after their car slammed into an Amtrak passenger train in Oxnard on Tuesday night.

Authorities say a black Infiniti G35, driven by Joel Anthony Arias, was traveling southbound on Rice Avenue, approaching Fifth Street, when it entered the railroad crossing and collided with the train at 7:26 p.m.

The railroad crossing arms were down, the bells and lights for the railroad crossing arms were activated and the train's horn was also audible, police said.

An Amtrak spokesperson said the Infiniti was "wedged under the front of the train."

Arias and a 19-year-old male passenger were declared dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Witnesses told officers that the Infiniti had been traveling at a high rate of speed just before the crash. It was not yet known if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

Anyone with information is urged to call Oxnard Police Senior Officer Maria Pena at (805) 385-7750.
