Anthony Anderson gives back to hometown Compton during holiday season

COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- Anthony Anderson is known for saying he's "just a kid from Compton." This weekend on Nov. 23, that "kid" goes home again. And it's for a good cause.

"It's a great time to be in a position to be able to come back to the community that helped make me who I am today and to give back to that community," said Anderson.

Anderson has always shown he has a love for Compton. We've seen him in the community before helping to make the holidays better for people he cares about deeply.

Now, with the help of the city of Compton, Anthony's foundation has teamed up with the Veritas Experience for an afternoon of giving called, Harvest of Hope. Shy Averett is CEO of Veritas Experience.

"They can go to anthonyandersonfamilyfoundation.com and it has all the information. It has links from the register. They get to select what food they want, and if they need school supplies, all that stuff is on the site. So, they can go straight there, and they'll get a confirmation number, and they'll get further instructions as well," said Averett.

This event at the Dollarhide Community Center is for families in need. The food and essential supplies are offered with love and support. Anderson remembers his own family receiving help growing up. He considers it a blessing to be able to pay it forward.

"I want to do this. I need to do this. It's part of my purpose," said Anderson. "It's not always about writing the check. It's about having a presence and giving your time. And sometimes your time is more valuable than a dollar that you may give because you are taking an interest, and you are showing up."

"We called it Harvest of Hope because we want to bring hope to other people," said Averett. "It's a lot of darkness in the world today, and a lot of families that are in need, so to be able to just use our talents and everything and bring hope hopefully to a lot of folks."

If you're in need the weekend of Nov. 22-23, remember it's essential you sign up. For more information, visit anthonyandersonfamilyfoundation.com.
