Beyond The Forecast: How to minimize your fall allergies

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- With so many weather changes in Southern California lately, your allergies are probably all over the place.

From rain to heat to wind, Eyewitness News spoke with a doctor on how you can minimize your fall allergies.

"The temperature variations really impact pollen count, the irritants that are in the air, for example, humidity makes dust more rampant," said Dr. Krikor Manoukian, a local allergist and immunologist. "The winds really carry the pollens, so that temperature variation is pretty significant in exacerbating symptoms."

If you've noticed your allergies increasing this fall season, you're not alone.

"Weeds tend to pollinate more. We have the Santa Ana winds kind of kicking in, that kind of blows up not only the pollens but also the irritants, such as dust," said Manoukian. 'You're going to notice more nasal symptoms. Maybe be proactive with the nasal sprays at your house, antihistamines ... you can be proactive in taking that to mitigate and minimize the exacerbation of your symptoms."

What other steps can you take to minimize your fall allergies?

"You can get an air purifier that can help minimize the irritants as well as the pollens, and there's medications out there, over-the-counter nasal sprays, tablets and obviously, you can coordinate your care with an allergist," said Manoukian.

We're not out of the woods just yet with the warm temperatures this week in some parts of Southern California, so don't be surprised if your allergies start to sneak up on you.
