Dog hospitalized after ingesting meth at Los Alamitos park

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. (KABC) -- A woman was left stunned after one of her dogs ingested meth while on a walk at a Los Alamitos park.

Nancy, who did not want to share her last name, said she took her dogs - Arah and Tobie - to Laurel Park last Monday for their daily walk when Tobie began acting strange.

"When we got home, she was just sitting there, and I was trying to call her, and she wouldn't come, and she wouldn't let me touch her," Nancy told Eyewitness News. "She didn't want to eat treats, then she started just twitching and just doing a mouth thing, and I thought she was maybe having a seizure. It just looked like something freaked her out."

She took Tobie to her regular veterinarian, who took the dog's temperature, which was 108.

"She told me in her practice, she's never seen a 108. She's only seen a 106 in 30 years of practice," said Nancy of her vet.

Tobie was rushed to the emergency room, where she tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

"I was just shocked, but I know it came from [the park] because we went straight home ... we do it every day. It's our usual pattern, so it just freaked me out," said Nancy.

Tobie was hospitalized, and doctors told Nancy that the dog could have had brain damage due to such a high temperature.

"Her heart rate was 200. I just can't imagine if I hadn't got her in when I did," said Nancy.

"It's just concerning, because we walk here all the time. There's an elementary school right there, and you know, it's scary. My vet said they could've just stepped in some powder and licked their paws. It doesn't need to be a lot. They could've just sniffed it and licked their nose, so it's just very concerning. I mean, it could've been a kid."

Nancy reported the incident to the Los Alamitos Police Department and the city manager.

By telling her story, she hopes others will be more aware of what their dogs sniff while they're out for a walk.

Fortunately, Tobie is feeling back to her normal self.
