Man dead after police shooting at El Monte gas station

EL MONTE, Calif. (KABC) -- One person is dead and another hospitalized following a police shooting at a gas station in El Monte.

The shooting happened at the Route 66 gas station near Garvey and Durfee avenues Thursday at about 10:35 p.m. Police said they were responding to a domestic violence situation before gunfire broke out.

Further details about what led up to the shooting were limited, but a dark-colored sedan was seen boxed in by police vehicles at the scene. The passenger side door of that vehicle appeared to have been ripped off.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not been identified. A woman was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Residents in the area said they were alarmed to hear multiple gunshots ring out late at night.

"I heard like six or seven gunshot... and yeah, we looked on the news and saw it this close so we had to come running over here," said one resident.

The California Department of Justice is leading the investigation into the shooting, citing Assembly Bill 1506, which, since 2021, requires the DOJ to investigate cases in which an officer shoots and kills someone who is an unarmed civilian. The agency did not specify if the man in Thursday's fatal police shooting was unarmed, but has previously said that it would assume jurisdiction in cases where it was unclear.

The agency will be required to publish a public report on this incident as part of AB 1506.

No further details were immediately known.
