Orange County sheriff's deputy hits, kills man who was crossing street

ORANGE, Calif. (KABC) -- A man is dead after he was hit by an on-duty Orange County sheriff's deputy.

The deadly incident happened around 10:20 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of E. Chapman and Avenue and Prospect Street, according to the sheriff's department.

Witnesses reported that the pedestrian was crossing the street outside of the crosswalk when he was struck, according to the department. The deputy was not responding to an emergency call at the time of the crash.

The man who was killed has not been identified.
