HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Rapper Young Dolph was injured in a shooting near Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue on Tuesday.

Eyewitness News learned the injured victim was the 32-year-old rapper from Memphis, whose real name is Adolph Thornton Jr.

The Hollywood shooting was reported shortly after 1 p.m. The victim was transported to an area hospital in critical but stable condition.

One person was in custody in connection with the shooting, Los Angeles police said.

Police said the rapper was involved in a confrontation with three people that started as a verbal argument and escalated into a physical altercation. Young Dolph fell to the ground and one of the three people started shooting, police said.

Young Dolph was able to get up and run into the Shoe Palace store while the three men fled in different directions. One man jumped into a gold-colored Escalade and drove a short distance, then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

Police were able to detain at least two people and one person remains on the loose.

The rapper was set to perform on Thursday at The Marke in Los Angeles. He was staying at the nearby Loews Hotel in Hollywood.

Young Dolph is known to have an ongoing rivalry and conflict with another rapper named Yo Gotti.

A law enforcement source told Eyewitness News that people known to associate with Yo Gotti were at the hotel and the shopping center when the shooting happened.

Police are looking into the connection.

Young Dolph has been active as a rapper since 2008, with greater commercial success coming more recently with the release of his 2016 album "King of Memphis," which made it to No. 49 on the Billboard U.S. charts and No. 5 in the U.S. rap category.

He has 2.2 million followers on Instagram.

Young Dolph was also involved in a shooting earlier this year, in which his SUV was riddled with 100 bullets during a February appearance in North Carolina.

He later released a song titled "100 Shots" and his latest album is titled "Bulletproof."
