You won't believe how much it costs to rent an apartment in some parts of the U.S. Then again, if you live in one of the areas with the highest rents, these numbers are probably all too familiar to you.

The real estate website Zumper just released its August rent data and finds that San Francisco is in fact the most explosive place in the country to live if you are renting a one bedroom apartment. The median rent for a one bedroom apartment there is a whopping $3,100 per month. New York was a close second, with the median rent for a one bedroom apartment topping out at $2,995.

Boston, Washington D.C., Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Diego and Philadelphia rounded out the rest of the Top 10, with rents ranging from $2,250 all the way down a comparatively affordable $1,375.

While San Francisco is the most expensive over all for renters, New York still tops the list for most expensive neighborhoods. If you want to live in New York's trendy Tribeca, you'll be paying around $4,250 each month. San Francisco's most expensive neighborhood is Russian Hill, where the rent averages $4,000.

If these outrageous numbers have left your head spinning, head to Detroit. Rent in the cheapest major U.S. metropolitan area is only about $565 per month and if you're willing to get some roommates, the median price per bedroom is just $272 per month.
