PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KABC) -- On the first day of summer, a heat wave has broken records all over Southern California. In Palm Springs, the thermometer hit 121 degrees in the early afternoon.
Many areas in Los Angeles County surpassed 100 degrees before noon Monday. Forecasters expected the day to be the peak of the heat wave.
At least two flights were canceled Monday afternoon because of the heat. Smaller, regional jets can't fly in temperatures above 118 degrees.
The National Weather Service reported 17 daily heat records broke Sunday, most of them hitting well over 100 degrees.
The strong, dry conditions could also cause a strain on the state's power grid, and residents were asked to conserve energy to avoid outages. A Flex Alert was issued from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. by the California Independent System Operator (ISO).
