Man struck, killed by elderly woman who then crashed, flipped car in Redondo Beach

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- A pedestrian was killed when an elderly driver slammed into him in Redondo Beach Tuesday.

Authorities said the crash happened around 11:39 a.m. when the driver struck the man as she headed westbound on Torrance Boulevard near South Francisca Avenue. She then hit a cinder block wall, which resulted in her car flipping over and landing on its roof.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is not yet known, authorities said.

Authorities said the woman was trapped in the car for some time before two Good Samaritans helped her out. She was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. The extent of her injuries was unknown.

A witness at the scene, Carlos Gomez, said he heard the crash and called 911. He said the impact was so strong it knocked the victim out of his shoes.

"I went back to the gentleman, and that's when I saw him jerking and moving, grasping for air. Within minutes the cops came, the cops was telling us to talk to him, have some kind of conversation with him, keep him going, but it was already too late," he said.

He added that there was blood all over the victim's face and paramedics tried "their hardest" to revive him to no avail.

Authorities said contributing factors such as a previous medical condition or driving under the influence were not known but were part of the investigation into the crash.
