LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- In light of the devastating earthquakes in Japan and Ecuador, Skype is offering customers the ability to call landlines and mobile phones in the two respective countries for free for the next few days.

The service excludes calls to special, premium service and non-geographical numbers. Internet and mobile fees may apply.

"We hope this helps you reach loved ones, friends and colleagues affected by recent events," the company said in a blog on its website.

Authorities say the magnitude-7.8 earthquake that hit Ecuador's sparsely populated coast Saturday night has killed 235 people and injured 1,557 others. Two powerful earthquakes in Japan last week killed 41 people.
