Permit denied for downtown LA slip-and-slide

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Hopes for a giant water slide planned for downtown Los Angeles apparently are drying up.

The company, Slide the City, announced Friday that after working with the city for two months, its permit for the event was denied.

There was a groundswell of opposition including an online petition of the slide as being wasteful, especially during California's drought.

"Whether this is a direct result of the drought or something else, we want to assure all of our participants and vendors that we have gone through every appropriate permitting step required," the company said in a statement posted on Facebook. "We have even jumped through many additional 'hoops' the City has created in the hope that they would see that we were flexible and willing to work with them."

Paul Gomez, spokesman for the Department of Public Works, confirmed that the permit was denied due to the statewide drought.

The 1,000-foot water slide would have run along Temple Street on Sept. 28.

The company apparently hasn't given up, hoping to hold it in the near future.
