ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) -- The Anaheim City Council has given the go-ahead for work to begin on A Town, a residential and commercial development near Angel Stadium.

The council unanimously approved the plan Tuesday night.

Originally, 11 high-rises were envisioned for the vacant property. Lennar Corporation scaled back plans to as many as 1,700 condominiums and apartments, and 50,000 square feet of retail space.

Buildings will be no taller than seven stories.

The development, which is in the city's Platinum Triangle, also includes two public parks.

Construction on the first phase of the project is expected to start by the end of the year, according to Donna Kelly, Lennar's vice president of community development.
