2 South Pasadena High School students arrested for mass shooting plot

SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) -- Two South Pasadena High School students plotting a mass shooting were arrested at their homes on Monday.

School officials contacted South Pasadena police about a possible plot to kill three staff members and as many students as possible, police said.

Detectives served search warrants at the homes of both suspects and discovered evidence. One was arrested without incident, while the other tried to flee before being arrested.

"This is a prime example of school officials recognizing suspicious behavior. It was this information that helped prevent a horrific tragedy," Sgt. Brian Solinsky said in a statement.

South Pasadena Unified School District Superintendent Geoff Yantz said he expected school to start as planned on Aug. 21. Psychologists and counselors were scheduled to be on campus.

"The police have the situation under control and there is currently no threat to students or employees," Yantz said.
