RIO DE JANEIRO -- Former Brazil striker Ronaldo says he is "appalled" by the chaotic preparations for the country's World Cup, arguing little that was promised to the people was delivered.

A member of the local organising committee, Ronaldo's comments on Friday in the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo are his harshest criticism so far of Brazil's planning for the World Cup, which begins in just under two weeks.

Ronaldo is a local hero in Brazil after winning two World Cups, and he says the country is "failing to take advantage" of the opportunity to showcase itself on the world stage.

Despite the biting criticism, Ronaldo says the country will host a "great World Cup," relying on the South American nation's love of football and its quest for a record sixth title.
