Stand-up paddle concept takes to dry land
A new take on stand-up paddle boarding is a hit on dry land.

While skateboards are decades old, the inception of the stand-up paddle craze got Cory McBride and his dad thinking about ways to combine the two concepts.

"A light bulb came up into our head, and we decided let's merge these two worlds: Paddle boarding and skateboarding," said Cory McBride, Kahuna Creations Marketing Manager

McBride also said, "We are the inventor of the land paddle. We actually patented the land paddle, and it's a fun way to ride."

The land paddle performance long boards range in size from about 3 to 5 feet.

Paddlers can even select how flexible and stable they want their boards to be. Add a helmet and protective gear, and you can be outfitted for about $300.

Now, if you're looking to land paddle as your sport, you might consider the Kahuna stick. It's about $90, but it's well worth the investment.

"The Kahuna stick helps you get the workout. It brings balance and stability to your ride, and it opens the game. It makes it so much more fun. It's a thrilling way to ride a board. You feel safe and you feel good because your body feels good," said McBride.

A fun ride that works the core and upper body.

"I like to change up my strokes a little bit when I ride. So, sometimes, I go a little bit wider and get a little bit more of my obliques. Sometimes a little bit closer -- focus on my chest and my triceps, work on my shoulders, upper back," said Hank Rubenstein of Kahuna Creations.

The main attraction for me? The stick helps you stop!

Certainly a plus for first-timers like Maddie Aubuchon of Los Angeles who said, "I loved it. It's a lot easier than I anticipated it being. Also, a lot more strenuous, but I don't know, you get the hang of it."

"I put my 85-year-old aunt on it today, and she loved it," said Rubenstein.

If you want to try before you buy, you can go to Maui and Sons in Venice on Tuesday nights and land paddle free of charge.

"We go for a ride down over to the pier for about a half-hour, hour. Bring a girl, it's a fun little activity. It's fitness. You ride into the sunset. What could be better?" said Rubenstein.
