RIVERSIDE COUNTY (KABC) -- It appears a mystery has been solved after new reports surfaced Wednesday night of strange lights seen in the sky over Southern California.
Several Eyewitness News viewers reported seeing the lights around 11 p.m. Viewer Angie Martinez, from San Jacinto, sent us a couple of pictures she took showing the cluster of lights in the sky. She said they would flicker, disappear and then reappear. Another viewer, Hunter Miranda, said he saw smoke rising from the lights.
So what were they? Camp Pendleton told Eyewitness News Thursday morning that the lights were very likely flares they shot up in the night sky.
But that doesn't explain last week when we had similar reports of strange lights from viewers in Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties. Military bases in the area and the Federal Aviation Administration all told us then that they had no information about the lights and there was no unusual aircraft activity.
