AUSTIN, Texas (KABC) -- Two burglary suspects are lucky to be alive after what can only be described as one very bad decision.

When officer Shane Cunningham attempted to stop Miguel Macias and James Hanlon after a burglary call in August 2013, Macias, the driver, rammed the police car and stepped on the accelerator.

The officer responded with a barrage of gunfire. Macias was shot five times, but both suspects lived.

On Thursday, Macias was sentenced to 32 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of aggravated assault on a police officer.
