Strong winds, debris cause power outages, damage across SoCal

Strong wind gusts knocked down branches causing damage to some areas in Southern California on Monday.

Wind gusts of up to 70 mph knocked down branches and caused scattered power outages and damage across Southern California Monday.

Hollywood Boulevard was closed between Cahuenga Boulevard and Wilcox Avenue in Hollywood after the wind caused debris to fall off the old Hollywood Pacific Theatre, Los Angeles police said.

The popular Blue Jam Cafe in Hollywood was also forced to close due to the damaging winds, the cafe tweeted.

A tree knocked down power poles and slammed into at least two cars in the 4900 block of Wilshire Boulevard in Hancock Park just after 9 a.m. No injuries were reported but L.A. Fire Department officials said the fallen tree also damaged a garage.

A tree also toppled over onto a car in South L.A. at about 7:30 a.m. Monday, trapping a person inside. Firefighters rushed to the scene near S. Broadway and E. Adams Boulevard and quickly freed the victim.

Meanwhile, winds knocked out power to about 24,000 Southern California Edison and L.A. Department of Water and Power customers on Monday.

In the city of L.A., about 7,900 customers were affected by outages in areas including Hollywood, Mid-Wilshire, Inglewood, Vermont-Slauson and Koreatown, LADWP officials said.

Edison said 954 customers were without power in Long Beach and about 44 customers were in the dark in Palos Verdes Estates. In Alhambra, 2,698 customers were without power due to weather-related conditions.
