"We made a pact with the villages that we're building the water wells in that, 'If you let more than 50 percent of the girls go to school, then we'll build the water wells next to those schools, so it will be convenient for both the girls and their family," said

YouthInkwell raises money for the wells by selling books written by children ranging from first to 12th grade. Ivy sees that this work can spark ideas.

"We're also inspiring kids here, right here in the United States, because when kids can see what other kids can do with their abilities, then a thought just pops up: 'Oh my gosh, maybe I can do something with my own writing too,'" said Yang.

Her work has her interacting with children and adults. Ivy has an extraordinary ability to connect with everyone.

"She will communicate with kids regardless of their age, as if they are her peer," said YouthInkwell Executive Director Jennifer Sarja. "We have a youth board of kids who are as young as 10 years old, and Ivy will talk with these 10-year-olds the same way she would talk with me."

Representing YouthInkwell, Ivy has travelled to see, in person, the impact of their work on the children of the world.

"Somehow their eyes just open up and I feel like maybe there is still hope for me, maybe I can hope for the future, and I can hope for something so much bigger. And I think that's the most important aspect of it, is just to bring hope to the people who seem to have so little," said Yang.

Doing so much to quench the thirst for water and knowledge, she is our Cool Kid, Ivy Yang.
