HPV vaccine not approved for older women

Federal regulators told manufacturer Merck they can't approve Gardasil for women ages 27 to 45.

Gardasil was approved in 2006 for preventing cervical cancer and genital warts in girls and young women ages 9 to 26.

It's one of Merck's most successful products.

A company spokesperson says regulators question Gardasil's effectiveness in the older age group.
