New sedans offer luxury and subtlety

They have just enough flash, but not too much. They're not necessarily cheap, but could still be considered reasonable. Call it automotive style with restraint for the times.

Volkswagen's new CC is kind of a morphing of a sleek coupe with a somewhat roomy four door. Extra style points for the curvy exterior and the designer interior, though it's strictly a four-seater. Good performance and a price that starts at under $30,000. Even pretty well loaded, it's well under $40,000.

From its sibling Audi, an updated A4 Sedan has a little more room inside, but it is still pretty tidy on the outside. Most drivers will be fine with the base four cylinder engine which puts out plenty of power while still getting reasonable mileage. Sticker prices vary, but a nice example can be had for under $40,000.

Want some sporty fun with your sensibility? Subaru's Legacy sedan is available as a more edgy GT model. It has turbocharged power under the hood and standard all wheel drive. It gets its racy pedigree from baby brother the STI, but in a more subtle package with more room inside and more luxury.

The Legacy GT is a step up from the small sporty WRX and STI Subaru models, but it shares a lot of the performance hardware. This model is a little bit larger and more luxurious.

The best part is that even fully loaded the Legacy is under $35,000.

For a real bargain with just enough comfort, the Pontiac G6 Sedan has been updated with a new transmission for the base four cylinder engine. Six gears instead of four mean this mid-sizer is even more frugal at the gas pump, while still delivering good acceleration. There's also ample comfort inside.

Changing times mean changing tastes. Choosing carefully a sedan buyer can ride in luxury and style without showing off too much.
