Getting lung disease may depend on genes

A new study linked a certain gene to smokers who develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD.

COPD includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema and causes a progressive decline in lung function.

About 25 percent of smokers develop it.

The study is in the journal Respiratory Research.
