'Crazy Heart' strikes chord with Bridges

LOS ANGELES Jeff Bridges gets under the skin of a down-on-his luck singer-songwriter in the new movie "Crazy Heart."

Oscar winning actor Robert Duvall is one of the film's producers, and also has a small part in the film.

He can't imagine anyone but Bridges striking such a chord with this role.

"It's a character study he inhabited, made him breathe and live," said Duvall. "It was one of his favorite parts ever."

And it's a part Bridges almost didn't play.

"I passed on it originally because a big hunk of the thing was missing -- no tunes," said Bridges. "It was all about music and there were no songs."

Bridges says that if it wasn't for a friend of his he probably wouldn't have done the film.

"About a year later, I ran into my buddy T-Bone Burnett and he said 'what about this film,' and I told him I read it. He asked if I was going to do it. I told him that if he did it, I would do it," said Bridges. "And boom that was the end of it."

"Crazy Heart" also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal. It will be in theaters in limited release on Wednesday.
