Man gets death sentence for killing cabbie

INDIO, Calif. The Riverside County District Attorney, Rod Pacheco, welcomed the sentence, saying it is "a deserving punishment for such a tragic and senseless murder."

Last month, a Riverside County jury convicted Jasso, 37, of first-degree murder, with a special circumstance of committing murder during a robbery and using a firearm.

In September 2003, Jasso and Fabian Perez hatched a plan to rob someone. While driving around the City of Indio, they were unable to find a victim and decided to rob a cab driver.

Jasso called a cab and he posed as a passenger when the cab arrived and got into the car.

Jasso shot the driver twice in the head and took his wallet. The men fled the scene with $80 and left the man to die. Perez is awaiting trial on the charges.

Jasso is expected to be sent to San Quentin to await execution.
