Gold Line tour unveils East L.A. treasures

EAST LOS ANGELES In part 2 of the tour, the first exit explored is the Indiana station, which is very close to the legendary Mercado shopping center. Just across the street is Tamales Lilianas, home of the famous tamales heard about for decades. Now, tamale fans don't even have to drive to get a little taste.

Following the tracks to the Maravilla stop, Lupe's #2 is the place to be. Known for delicious burritos, Lupe's #2 has been a homegrown East L.A. favorite for more than three decades.

Which burrito style is most popular?

"You can have the red chili burrito with the meat and red chili, or you can have the meat and chicharron, which is soaked in hot chili," owner Lupe Portillo said.

Around here, Lupe's burritos are cited as the best, and she is affectionately known as "the boss." To that, Portillo responds, "Thank you, makes my 37 years worthwhile being here, you know."

Continuing past the East L.A. Civic station, the Gold Line brakes at the Atlantic stop.

Tucked inside a busy strip mall is one sweet shop, Las Deliciosas (known as "Que Delicious" too!). It has a packed menu featuring sweetbreads, Mexican candies, fresh juices, flan, cakes, and some very unique frozen treats.

With over 20 flavors of Mexican-style sorbets, I went with the tasty mango-and-chile-powder flavor, a delicious ending to finish up our ride on the Gold Line extension.
