Officials said Luis Fraire collapsed on Tuesday while walking toward the boys' locker room. The seventh grader was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The case was turned over to homicide investigators because of the boy's age, but foul play is not suspected.
A sheriff's department spokesman said the boy had heart problems and had complained of chest pains.
