Judge nixes Venice boardwalk vendor rules

VENICE, Calif. Los Angeles has had a lottery system for the past two years to determine which vendors and performers are allowed to sell on the crowded boardwalk.

However, U.S. District Judge Dean Pragerson ruled that the system violates first amendment rights.

The judge issued a temporary injunction, meaning that for now, permits will be issued on a first come, first serve basis.

The judge's ruling also struck down another rule that bars amplified sound and musical instruments in certain areas and at certain times.
