16 hospitalized by downtown LA noxious fumes

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES The noxious odor was reported near 14th and Hill streets. Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused it.

The fumes were coming from the Kaiser Pediatric and Family Medical Center. A triage area was set up near 15th and Olive streets. A total of 16 people were taken to the hospital, one of them a pregnant woman.

It happened just before 11 a.m., and according to the L.A. City Fire Dept., the building manager informed them that there was an air-conditioning company on scene doing some work. Shortly after the work started, people started to feel sick.

L.A. City Fire also reported that a few blocks away, the gas company was odorizing natural gas and maybe that could be connected to the scene.

Sixteen people were taken to L.A. County USC Medical Center. Some are feeling better after they got more fresh air. Some were so sick that they vomited on the sidewalk.

The cause of the fumes was under investigation.
