LA man convicted of sexual assault on OC bus

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.

Herath Permarathne, 55, was convicted on one count of assaulting a teen on an Orange County bus.

The unidentified teen girl was waiting at a Costa Mesa bus stop at about 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 25, 2010, when Permarathne approached her and began talking to her. The victim avoided talking to him and boarded the bus when it arrived approximately 10 minutes later.

Permarathne followed the girl onto the bus and sat next to her and attempted to fondle her legs and groin area. The girl was able to get away from him and exited the bus. She was picked up by her boyfriend's father, who reported the incident to police.

Permarathne was identified on bus surveillance video.

He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, three years probation, and mandatory sex offender registration.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office is seeking possible additional victims. Anyone with additional information or who believes they have been a victim is encouraged to contact Supervising District Attorney Investigator Randy Litwin at (714) 347-8794.
