Surfers wait in water for tsunami in Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.

It was a typical day for surfing before the water pulled out of Monterey Bay toward the Pacific Ocean when the tsunami hit.

Around 8:10 a.m., the water dropped by about 9 feet within seconds. Some surfers were able to walk on the wet sand with their boards while others ignored lifeguards' warnings and stayed in the water.
