The incident began around 8:43 p.m. on Venice Blvd. at S. Robertson Blvd. in Palms.
LAPD officers were responding to a domestic violence call in the area.
The male suspect took a female hostage for a brief couple of minutes. The hostage was able to break free and then an officer-involved shooting occurred.
No officers were injured.
It is unknown if the suspect shot himself or was shot by an officer.
The suspect is alive, and it appears he sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is being treated at a local hospital.
No others were injured.
