LA sheriffs hold shredding event for ID theft awareness

CARSON, Calif.

The sheriff's Identity Theft Task Force, Los Angeles Regional Crime Stoppers and the document destroying service Shred-It hosted the shredding event.

It was designed to heighten public awareness about /*identity theft*/ and teach people that they can protect themselves by destroying documents with personal information, rather than simply disposing of them in non-secure places such as garbage bags.

"People should care about their privacy and shred their personal documents and anything confidential because a lot of people, they just throw it away, and it gets into the wrong hands and people's IDs get stolen," said Nicole Nishida with the /*Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department*/.

There was no charge for shredding documents, but donations were collected for charities like the March of Dimes and Sheriff's Youth Foundation.
