Stolen car chase ends in rollover in West Covina

WEST COVINA, Calif.

Officials with the CHP say the pursuit started along the westbound10 Freeway in the city of Ontario.

According to the CHP, it appears that officers initially tried to stop the driver in a 1990 Ford Explorer about 9 p.m. for driving with no lights and talking on the phone. Officers later found out it was stolen.

The pursuit hit speeds of up to 100 mph through West Covina, La Puente, Baldwin Park and Valinda. A spike strip apparently was ineffective and the SUV continued to move at high speeds.

Just before 10 p.m., the SUV was moving northbound on Azusa Avenue in West Covina apparently to get on the onramp for the 10 Freeway when the CHP delivered a pit maneuver, causing the SUV to flip along the onramp.

Officers then pulled the suspect out of the car. The unidentified man wasn't seriously injured when the Explorer flipped. He was surrounded, arrested and was expected to face several charges.
