Irvine man charged with tossing son overboard in Newport Harbor

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.

Briles is accused of throwing his 7-year-old son overboard while on a tour boat in the Newport Beach Harbor. The boy was thrown in the path of busy boat traffic, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

Briles, 35, an Irvine resident, is accused of being under the influence of alcohol on Aug. 28 while on the boat with his girlfriend and his two sons. Briles allegedly repeatedly slapped and poked his 7-year-old son. When the boy cried and complained, Briles allegedly picked the boy up and threw him over the side of the boat approximately 10 feet.

Briles jumped into the water shortly after, according to the OCDA, as angry passengers began to yell at him. He did not swim toward his son, according to witnesses.

The boy was helped out of the water by another boat.

Briles was brought back onboard the original boat. He then allegedly resisted attempts by Orange County Sheriff's deputies to remove him from the boat.

Briles is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 26.
