Police say a motorist died Sunday night after being hit by a train in Riverside.

The collision between the train and the driver in a BMW happened about 8:45 p.m. in the area of Adams Street. Police said the driver apparently tried to beat the train.

Officers responded to the scene and were able to remove the male driver before the car erupted in flames.

Medics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Witnesses told police that the crossing arms were operational at the time of the crash. The train engineer told police the driver tried to go around the crossing arm.
