North Korea said Thursday that it will enshrine Kim's body at the same palace where the body of his father, Kim Il Sung, has been since his death in 1994.
It was unclear whether their bodies would be in the same room.
North Korean media report the country will also erect a statue of Kim Jong Il, set up portraits of him smiling and build what it calls "towers to his immortality" across the country.
In addition, North Korea has labeled his Feb. 16 birthday as "Day of the Shining Star." Kim Il Sung's birthday is called "Day of the Sun."
Experts say North Korea is boosting "the cult of personality surrounding Kim Jong Il" as it links him with Kim Il Sung.
On Thursday, North Korea's state television showed photos of a smiling Kim Jong Un gesturing in a manner similar to his father and wearing a similar parka as he spoke to military officers and inspected construction sites.
