Sleeping boy injured in Santa Fe Springs drive-by shooting

SANTA FE SPRINGS, Calif.

The incident happened around 11 p.m. on the 9300 block of Danby Avenue. Authorities said the shooting came from the street, but it's not known if the house was targeted.

"We were just sitting around the table, talking with my parents, and all of a sudden we heard a few gunshots, maybe like five rounds or more. Everybody dropped to the floor. My sister comes out of the room, saying that her son had been shot," said the victim's aunt, Gabby Sotelo.

The boy was struck in the knee. He was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Family members fear the injury may impact any plans he had for playing sports.

"He's not going to be able to play sports, they told him, so that sucks because he was just barely joining sports," said the victim's cousin Angel Sotelo.

Police suspect the shooting is connected to gang activity, though they can't say why this family was targeted. At least four shots hit the home: one hit the doorway and another hit a window frame; the shot through the window is the one that hit the boy.

Detectives have very little information and do not have a suspect description. Anyone with information was asked to contact police at (562) 567-9200.

CORRECTION: It was earlier reported that the boy is 11 years old. He is 12.
