'This Means War' brings action, love, laughs

LOS ANGELES

Reese Witherspoon shares the big screen with two love interests in the new action comedy - Tom Hardy and Chris Pine.

The two play top-notch CIA agents who also happen to be best friends. They also happen to fall in love with the same woman.

The men utilize their secret agent skills and wage a high-tech battle to gain the upper hand in the competition to win the heart of Witherspoon's character.

McG directed the film and allowed the actors a lot of breathing room in their scenes.

"I think that was the great thing about it, because we really liked the script but we also had room to improvise, so everybody kind of brought their own flavor of comedy to it. It's nice to see people's personalities emerge in the movie," Witherspoon said.

Pine said he had fun getting to know people and working off one another during scenes. He said he particularly enjoyed taking cues from Chelsea Handler, who makes her big screen debut playing Witherspoon's married best friend.

And by all accounts, her improvs kept the set lively.

"I like to just kind of throw things off the cuff and do my own thing and McG was aware of that, and Reese became aware of it when we were on set," Handler said. "It doesn't turn out well for the person you're in a scene with because they don't know when to start talking because you're not saying anything on the script."

McG actually had to cut out some of Handler's scenes to make the PG13 rating. Cast members say they anticipate great outtakes on the DVD.
