Cholesterol levels continue to drop, CDC says

While two-thirds of adults in the U.S. are overweight, only 13 percent have high cholesterol, according to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Experts believe it's largely because so many Americans take cholesterol-lowering drugs. Falling smoking rates and other factors also play a role.

The government set a goal that no more than 17 percent of adults have high total cholesterol.

Women reached that goal about five years ago, while men did it more than 10 years ago.
