Van Nuys pursuit: Suspect killed in shootout

October 18, 2012 12:00:00 AM PDT
A cellphone camera was rolling when a police chase ended in a hail of gunfire in Van Nuys, leaving one suspect dead and another wounded.

Police said the pursuit started around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday when officers tried to pull over the driver of a silver Nissan sedan for a traffic violation. Instead of stopping, the driver took off, and suspects inside the vehicle started shooting at officers.

Officers used a PIT maneuver to stop the car at Vanowen Street and Firmament Avenue. A man armed with a gun stepped out of the car. Multiple officers opened fire, killing the male driver.

A female passenger was injured, though officers said she was not shot. She was transported to a local hospital, where she was expected to survive.

No officers were injured. Authorities did not release many details about the male suspect, but they said he had a lengthy criminal record. The shooting remains under investigation.
