Plastic bags banned from Laguna Beach stores

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif.

The ban applies to supermarkets and other retail outlets. Shoppers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags.

Stores will give out paper bags, but they are allowed to charge 10 cents for each one. The goal is to reduce the amount of plastic trash that goes into landfills and the ocean.

It's the first ordinance of its kind in Orange County. A similar law takes effect in Dana Point in April.
