School under fire for sending letters to students about being overweight

VARNVILLE, S.C.

North District Middle School identified 40 students who were at risk of becoming obese and pulled the group into a meeting to speak to a nutritionist about better eating habits.

Parents say their kids are being teased about the meeting, and they're having a hard time coping.

"By the time they were done and got to the next school period, it was labeled the fat meeting," said parent Cheasta Scheller. "He has cut his portions down. He's even turned down food."

The superintendent of Hampton County School District agrees with parents, and says the school handled the situation incorrectly.

The principal at the middle school issued a letter of apology to the students for being teased.

One parent has contacted a lawyer and may take legal action against the school district.
