Elephant meat, other protected wildlife seized at LAX

LOS ANGELES

On May 6, more than 380 snake, lizard and crocodile skin purses were found during a baggage inspection of a 31-year-old male passenger arriving from Nigeria at LAX, according to a CBP news release.

Nearly half a pound of elephant meat from Thailand destined for Fresno was seized at the International Mail Facility on May 9, and a prohibited, dead primate from Indonesia addressed to North Port, Fla. was seized a day later, the news release stated.

Authorities said this wildlife is protected by Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, or CITES.

All items that were seized were turned over to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Officials have not released the man's name. He has not been charged.
